Aimpoint compm4

The Aimpoint CompM4 is, as of 2008, the latest development of the red dot sight adopted by the U.S. military. It is produced by Aimpoint AB and is the successor to the earlier Aimpoint CompM2. The sight is a non-magnified, both-eyes-open aiming solution which provides extremely fast target acquisition and allows accurate aiming in low-light conditions, where iron sights are useless. There are a total of 16 brightness settings, the lower 7 intended for use with night vision devices and the upper 9 for daylight. The CompM4 is powered by a standard AA battery, and the manufacturer claims that the sight will run continuously for 8 years on a single battery, in its 10th brightness setting. In comparison to the Trijicon ACOG, which is the other optical sight most commonly used by U.S. forces, the Aimpoint offers superior performance in close-quarters engagements within 100 yards or so. The 4x magnified ACOG, with its range-estimating reticle, is a better solution for precision long-range shots. Non-magnified sights have no eye relief, meaning that the user may place his eye at any distance from the lens and the reticle will remain visible. This allows flexibility in mounting and shooting position. The CompM4 is also parallax-free, meaning that the point of aim will not shift if the user’s eye is off-center in relation to the lens. Aiming with a red-dot sight is similar to aiming with a laser; the user keeps both eyes open and can continue to observe his target and surroundings. The advantage of red-dot sights is that no light is projected which could reveal the shooter’s position.
